“DO NOT SEE THE WHITE LIGHT” (THEME OF EYES AND VISION IN THE FORMULA OF SOUTH SLAVIC

CURSE)

The article analyzes the texts of Bulgarian and Serbian curses, in which the motifs of eyes and vision appear. The content of curses is considered: what kind of wishes of evil, associated with vision, are typical for the southern Slavs. With the help of the “visual” code, the cursed in an allegorical form (through blindness and invisibility, numerous allusions to the funeral rite) expresses the wish for an evil death and a dysfunctional stay in the next world.

The article analyzes the texts of Bulgarian and Serbian curses, which mention the motives of eyes and eyesight. The meaning of curses is explored from the point of views, which particular harm connected with eyesight are typical for the South Slavs. By means of a "visual" code one allegorically (referring to blindness, invisibility, numerous allusions on funeral the ritual) wishes to the cursed one an excruciating death and unhappy being beyond grave.

Key words: ethnolinguistics, folklore, curses, folk axiology, logical propositions, eyes, sight.

Curses are a special genre of ritual speech that has a clear goal: to invoke various misfortunes, illnesses or even death on the addressee. Although, in its intention, cursing is the opposite of wishing for good, i.e. well, in form and subject matter, they are often very similar. Curses are similar in form to the formulas of swearing, in which the speaker invokes evil on himself in order to make others believe him, i.e. he declares his readiness to suffer punishment (misfortune, illness, death) if he lies or breaks a promise. However, if curses express not only the wish for evil, but also the negative attitude of the speaker towards the addressee or his actions, then in “self-curses” the invocation of evil is in no way connected with an emotional assessment, it serves only as a means of proving the rightness. In the texts of curses, the two mentioned components can be present to varying degrees: sometimes the invocation of misfortune fades into the background, leveled out, the expression of a negative attitude towards the addressee becomes the main thing, then the curses approach the genre of abuse, slander. It is no coincidence that in Slavic languages words derived from Praslav. *klqti, used to nominate this type of ritual speech, have both meanings - both "curse, wish evil, anathematize", and "scold, swear": Bolg. kolna "to curse", Bolg. dial. clan "to curse", Rus. dial. to curse, I swear "to scold, scold" (Psk., Tver., arch., etc.), Ukr. curse, curse "curse-

nat", "vilify, scold", Sloven. YёLa "curse, curse". On the other hand, the vocabulary of the same nest can mean both an oath, an oath, and a curse, a spell. " and "oath", Macedonian kletva "oath, oath" and "curse", Serbo-Chorv. kSh\a "curse" and "oath", Polish. Ys^a "curse", "oath", "spell".

The genre of curses in the scientific literature has recently received considerable attention. Researchers are interested in both genre features and the form of curses, as well as their content, i.e. specific types of desired evil, as well as an axiological component (a system and hierarchy of values), which is an integral part of curses. This article discusses the formulas of South Slavic curses with the motif of eyes and sight. Bulgarian and Serbian collections of curses served as sources of materials. 1. Since we will focus primarily on the content side of curses (i.e., about those troubles that are invoked on the cursed), it seems possible to consider the texts of curses and "self-curses" together without separating them by genre.

The theme of eyes and vision is one of the central ones in the texts of curses among the Slavs. For example, among Russians such formulas of “self-curses” are widely known, such as: burst my eyes so that I can go blind, not to see the light of God, not to see the world of light; curses: my eyes would not look at you - cf. below Serbian. not the video is higher (so that I don’t see you anymore), and this formula can be replaced by not beat those (so that you don’t exist). Among the Poles there are curses A ¿ebu§ o§1er! Bogdaj er Yaerte wylazty! (May you go blind! God forbid that your zenks come out!). Already these examples give an idea of how versatile the theme of vision is revealed in curses: we can talk about both the loss of vision and the property of being invisible, i.e. non-existent.

The pragmatic context (situation) of uttering a curse, i.e. the addressee, the addressee, their relationship, the reason that caused the curse - all this is essential for understanding texts, which, as a rule, are pronounced spontaneously and are closely related to specific conditions. Unfortunately, collections of texts very rarely provide explanations regarding context, although in some cases it is the context that makes it possible to explain why the eyes (and vision) become the object of a curse. For example, a curse addressed to a person with "ugly" eyes takes on additional meaning. Corrected you clean ^. - Kazvat on toy, koito ima lose your eyes, for not urinating any drain or children) (So that your eyes burst. - They tell the one who has "ugly" eyes so that he does not mutilate cattle or a child). The desire to lose eyes here can be interpreted as a way to neutralize a dangerous look, blinding a potential carrier of danger. AT this case the curse can probably be put on a par with verbal amulets that are pronounced to protect against the evil eye (cf. East-sl. "Salt in your eyes, a stone in your teeth"). In most cases, sight becomes the object of a curse because in the traditional system of values it occupies a special place among other human senses (cf. the Russian proverb “it is better to see once than to hear seven times”), and visual perception plays an important role in shaping the traditional picture of the world.

The ability to see and be seen is one of the main features of "this" world: this visible light is opposed to that light - the world of darkness and blindness. AT Bulgarian"white light, peace" is called b&lo seen, i.e. the world is what can be seen with human vision. And vice versa, that light is designated as an invisible face: Invisible face yes fanesh! (To you on the one

1 I am grateful to L.N. Vinogradova and I.A. Sedakova for help in finding sources and in translating difficult dialect texts.

the light has gone!). This wish refers to a person who goes far or leaves without asking, willfully. Vision becomes a hallmark of a living being, while blindness, lack of vision, of a non-living being, cf. metaphorical designation of death through blindness: closed his eyes "died", blind man's blind man "dead", as well as the custom of closing the eyes of the dead after death. About the last tear that rolled out of the eye of the deceased, in Polissya they said: "vision has flowed away." The idea of the world of the dead as a world of darkness and blindness gives rise to a number of beliefs and ritual actions, explained by the need to take care of the sight of the dead in the next world: this is the fear of clogging the eyes of ancestors, violating the prohibitions on working on memorial days; the custom of sweeping dust from tombstones to “clear the eyes” of the dead; the custom of making a coffin with cut or painted windows so that the dead could see the other dead; the custom of lighting candles at certain moments of funeral and memorial rites to light the way for the dead, etc. . Invoking blindness or invisibility on the addressee, the curser ultimately wishes him death. The theme of death is one of the central themes in curses; it can be expressed either directly or allegorically (metaphorically or metonymically), in particular, through the motif of eyes and vision.

If we consider curses related to the topic of eyes and vision, then, in addition to the speech situation, it is also necessary to take into account the situation of eye contact itself. At the same time, the proposition of eye contact, in which there is a subject of vision (who looks / sees), an object of vision (who is looked at / who is seen), an instrument of vision (eyes) and the very ability to look / see (vision), is included in the speech situation of the curse, where their actants act (the addressee and addresser of the curse, the performer of the curse (God), as well as the text itself being sent - the curse). When one logical situation is superimposed on another, the addressee of the curse (the object of the curse) can take different positions: act either as the subject of eye contact, or as its object. In curses, we are dealing, first of all, with a violation of eye contact, its impossibility (in a situation where the cursed person acts as a subject, this is blindness, when invisibility is in the role of an object). Violations may also concern the "tool" of vision, i.e. eye.

Let us turn to the model of curses, where the cursed person (the object of the speech situation) acts (actually or potentially) as the subject of the situation of vision (model: so that the cursed person sees / does not see something). Curses are quite numerous in which the speaker seeks to disturb the normal situation of vision for the cursed person, making him physically blind. This includes texts that contain wishes for damage to the instrument of vision (eyes). They do not explicitly refer to blindness, but it is implied that as a result of damage to the eyes, eye contact will be difficult or impossible. These curses are among others containing a wish for harm to health: various misfortunes must occur with certain parts of the body (head, tongue, ears, etc.), while special attention is paid to the eyes in comparison with other organs and parts of the body: a list of misfortunes called on the eye is wide enough.
